University residents are now able to check for open washers and driers in their residence halls with the click of a mouse.
Laundry Alert, a Web site that allows residents to virtually access their residence hall laundry rooms, is being offered to campus residents by the Department of Residential Life.
Residents can view how many machines are available or receive an e-mail when the machine of their choice is done with its cycle, said Kim Roberts, marketing coordinator of Contracted Auxiliary Services.
The Web site also allows users to view a history of the laundry room to see when the room is usually the busiest.
Christine Craig, chemical engineering freshman, said she was excited when she heard about the new site, because it will save her a trip down to the laundry room to see if there are any machines available.
The Web site is being offered as part of a five-year contract with Caldwell and Gregory, the University’s laundry service, said Jeff Campbell, associate director of Contracted Auxiliary Services. He said there is no extra cost to students.
All of the resident hall laundry rooms except Highland Hall can be accessed through the Web site, Campbell said. He said the Highland Hall laundry room was not included because of plans to tear down the building.
Campbell said the University began the program “just to be able to offer a new and different service with laundry to students.”
Roberts said the University is trying to make doing laundry more convenient for students.
“It eliminates the need of having to sit there and wait,” Campbell said.
Business management freshman Devin Graham said the system will be useful.
“If I go to do my laundry, I will definitely use it,” Graham said.
The system is run through the Internet, and software must be wired to each laundry room, Campbell said.
He said the idea came from Mark Kraner, director of Contracted Auxiliary Services, who saw the service being offered at other universities.
To access the system, go to www.laundryalert.com using the access code LSU3733.
