The Baton Rouge metro area’s carbon footprint from transportation and residential energy use increased almost 3 percent between 2000 and 2005, a report released by the Brookings Institution shows.
The average per capita footprint of the nation’s 100 largest metro areas increased 1.1 percent during that time, compared to the 2.99-percent increase in Baton Rouge.
The average metropolitan Baton Rouge resident emitted 2.51 tons – 48th of 100 – of carbon from highway transportation and residential energy in 2005. The report said the average American emitted 2.60 tons of carbon from transportation and residential energy.
Baton Rouge ranked 45th in carbon emitted through highway transportation and 69th in carbon emitted from residential energy use.
