On Saturday the Spanish Moon will be full of indie kids wearing Chuck Taylors and black square-rimmed glasses, lenses fogged up from cigarette smoke. The reason: The Hold Steady will be playing Spanish Moon on February 11, 2006.
The Brooklyn-based band classifies themselves simply as a “rock band” on their Web site www.theholdsteady.com.
The critically acclaimed band was born partly from the ashes of Lifter Puller, a Minneapolis art-punk band. The Hold Steady has been compared to such artists as Bob Dylan because of vocalist Craig Finn’s rambling narratives set to rock music that attempt to fit song structure around them.
Aaron Scruggs, the booking manager for the Spanish Moon, said he is excited for the indie rock band’s upcoming show.
The band is on the label Frenchkiss Records, which also represents large indie bands such as Les Savy Fav.
Scruggs said the Spanish Moon is a large fan of Frenchkiss Records, and he feels lucky to book bands with the label.
“We love anyone off Frenchkiss,” said Scruggs.
Scruggs said the show should be large, based on the amount of phone calls the Spanish Moon has received and the amount commercials that the venue has placed.
Scruggs said the band was originally scheduled for Baton Rouge, not New Orleans as many bands who have played Baton Rouge lately have been.
“It’s one of our mid-level shows,” said Scruggs.
Regardless, he is excited about the fact that they are playing the Spanish Moon. Even though he normally has a big hand in choosing who will play the venue, when a band he enjoys plays the venue, he becomes elated.
“We get lucky to get the bands we enjoy,” said Scruggs.
They will be playing with Swearing at Motorists and The Plastic Constellations, another band on Frenchkiss Records..
The tickets are $10, and the doors open at 9 p.m. The tickets can be purchased at the door or on www.ticketweb.com.
