U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is asking for a report on the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina.
In a directive released Wednesday, Napolitano said there is an opportunity to take a “fresh look” at rebuilding communities affected by the August 2005 storm and that she wants to understand the circumstances surrounding several key areas to determine how best to move forward.
Those areas include housing and hurricane-damaged infrastructure eligible for funding by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
President Bush’s hurricane recovery chief left a list of unresolved issues for the Obama administration, including a funding dispute over a teaching hospital in New Orleans. That is on Napolitano’s list of issues to better understand.
She wants a final report by Feb. 24.
