The Daily Reveille sports staff shares their thoughts after LSU’s 17-16 win against Florida.
Brandon Adam | LSU still has flaws
Yes, LSU went on the road and beat Florida in the Swamp. A Florida team that is missing an abundance of starters due to injury and suspension. A Florida team that LSU was favored over by the time the ball was kicked off.
The Tigers still have problems, and they are playing a lot better team in Auburn next Saturday.
Senior quarterback Danny Etling struggled against the Gators. He did not see wide open receivers, missed the ones he did see and left the pocket well before he had to on occasion.
LSU was also gashed by Florida’s run game throughout the day and gave up almost 200 yards on the ground.
If LSU plans on contesting Auburn, Etling and LSU’s front seven must play better.
Jarrett Major | Field Goal Kicking
If there is one position LSU has really struggled in this season — it is several positions.
I am not great at math, and the Tigers have not been great.
One of LSU’s biggest struggles, however, has come from it’s field goal kickers. Today, LSU’s kicker shined.
Freshman Connor Culp, who previously made only one of two field goal attempts, made his only attempt from 38 yards and knocked down both PATs. Culp is now 6/6 on PATs on the season.
Florida was perfect on field goal attempts, but missed one of its two PAT attempts which ultimately gave LSU the win. This was an impressive turnaround from last week’s loss. The Tigers managed to be better than the opponent in an area that LSU struggled in and it gave LSU a huge victory.
Kennedi Landry | Defense wins championships
It wasn’t the prettiest game, but LSU came up big on the road in a pivotal SEC matchup. The Tigers showed their heart and their will to win.
Perhaps the best thing to come out of this game was the defense on Florida’s final drive. They may have played their best defense all season on this one drive. The resilience shown was reminiscent of how well LSU’s defense has played in previous years.
With just over four minutes left in the game, the score 17-16, the Tigers rallied to force the Gators to turn the ball over on downs. A tipped pass on fourth down by sophomore linebacker Devin White secured the win for the Tigers.
This drive may be the brightest spot in LSU’s uncertain season, but I can say in all certainty that if LSU plays like that on every drive, the games will never be this close.
