LSU Campus Life informed and encouraged students to get involved with the many organizations the University offers during its biannual Student Involvement Fair on Aug. 31 in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom of the LSU Student Union.
“We have 90 organizations each day, all different organizations here to showcase their organization and potentially, hopefully, have a home for someone whether you’re a current student or a new student,” said Coordinator for Involvement with Campus Life Delia Madrid-Nothdurft. “It’s a great way to get involved and just get connected to the campus.”
Students from various organizations participated in the fair by making signs and handing out brochures to promote their clubs to students.
Biochemistry sophomore Katie Gatewood is the representative for Animal Care for a Cause, a new organization on campus. Gatewood used the fair to inform students about the club and its purpose.
“We are here to be a voice and an advocate for underprivileged animals,” Gatewood said. “We are going to hold fundraisers and create donations and stuff to donate to humane societies and all kinds of independent organizations that share the same cause that we do.”
Mass communication junior Ben Hosford is the social media director of eSports at LSU, one of the University’s more successful student organizations.
“Our main aim is to foster both competitive and casual gaming here on campus. We have a few competitive teams which have competed on a national level,” Hosford said. “In collegiate eSports, we support games of people that just want to come out and play. “We’re one of the bigger clubs on campus. We’re pretty inclusive. Everyone is welcome.”
Spanish senior Maci Ousset is the representative for the Karate Club that has been at LSU since 1965.
“Every involvement fair that we have, we get a nice-sized list of students who are interested in the club and from there, we invite them to come to class and once they get into class, I personally will teach the beginner class and if they like it, they stay,” Ousset said. “Normally, with this recruitment fair, we have a lot of new people coming [to] it. It’s a great way to recruit and have more people come into the club.”
Madrid-Nothdurft said the second part of the Student Involvement Fair has been postponed due to campus being closed on Aug. 30.
“Unfortunately, with yesterday’s closure, we weren’t able to host it,” she said. “However, we will host yesterday’s groups that were scheduled and registered next Wednesday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.”
