BATON ROUGE- Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry confirmed that the two BRPD officers involved in the shooting death of Alton Sterling will not be charged in a press conference this morning.
Following the conclusion of the state’s two-year investigation into the death of Alton Sterling, Louisiana Attorney General, Jeff Landry announced that both Blane Salamoni and Howard Lake would not receive any criminal charges for shooting Alton Sterling.
Upon review of the evidence, Landry said Salamoni and Lake reacted understandably considering the circumstances the officers were under at the time of the shooting.
The Sterling family’s attorney Chris Stewart said Landry’s decision was for political gain and not justice.
“It takes courage to have political office. It takes courage to be a prosecutor and it takes courage to fight for justice,” Stewart said.
“We didn’t see that today.”
Stewart and other members of the Sterling family said they will look to pursue justice for Alton Sterling politically rather than using protests.
Alton Sterling’s aunt, Sandra Sterling who suffered two strokes since Alton Sterling’s death, said she will not support Jeff Landry after his announcement this morning.
“I’m a voter. You won’t get my vote, sir,” Sterling said.
Following Landry’s announcement, Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and Chief Murphy Paul announced in another press conference, that they would conduct a separate internal investigation into BRPD to determine whether the police department should take disciplinary action.
Governor John Bel Edwards released a statement about the state’s decision following the attorney general’s announcement. According to the Governor, the Louisiana Department of Justice conducted their investigation within Louisiana state law regardless of the decision.
“I support Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and Chief Murphy Paul’s decision to conduct an administrative review to determine if any disciplinary action should be taken within the Baton Rouge Police Department,” the Governor said.
The attorney general released a report on the full investigation into Alton Sterling’s death. It’s available to the public on the attorney general’s website.
