BATON ROUGE – One LSU researcher is revolutionizing sidewalks on campus with bendable concrete.
LSU Construction Management Research Associate Gabriel Arce and his team repaired two sections of sidewalk on Tower Drive near South Stadium Drive Tuesday morning. They used Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), also known as ductile or bendable concrete.
It’s an idea almost two years in the making, and Arce says it’s stronger and more durable than regular concreate because of its flexible nature.
The idea originated at Ohio State University, but Arce says his version is cheaper and the materials are easier to access.
Arce says the next test for the bendable concrete will be to hit the road, where cars and trucks will test driving over the concrete on a simulated roadway.
