With less than week until the Tigers host their annual spring game, the LSU football team held its second closed scrimmage Saturday, and LSU coach Les Miles was pleased with his team’s effort.
“I told the team after the scrimmage that was the kind of scrimmage we’re used to seeing,” Miles said. “I felt like the defense really made some nice tackles, played situations really well.”
LSU used a total of four quarterbacks in the scrimmage, and Miles said the team threw for 406 yards and gained 243 on the ground.
Junior quarterback Brandon Harris led the team in passing. Miles said Harris completed 16-for-21 passes for 227 yards and four touchdowns. Junior transfer quarterback Danny Etling was 10-for-15 with 66 yards passing and no touchdowns.
Junior running back Leonard Fournette lead the team in rushing with seven carries for 65 yards. Sophomore Derrius Guice also received touches, finishing the day with 10 carries for 46 yards.
Overall Miles said Harris played better in this weekend’s scrimmage and has ran mostly with the first-team offense.
“I felt like Brandon had a sharper scrimmage than the scrimmage before,” Miles said. “He’s ready to be the quarterback.”
On the receiving end, freshman wide receiver Dee Anderson caught four passes for 89 yards and was on the receiving end of a 63-yard touchdown.
Defensively, junior linebacker Donnie Alexander led the team in tackles with seven, Miles said, and Miles also praised the play of freshman cornerback Saivion Smith.
“We asked him to step up in there and play against some of the better receivers,” Miles said. “I think he’s had a nice spring and continues to improve.”
Sione Teuhema suspended; injury update
Miles announced junior defensive end Sione Teuhema has been indefinitely suspended. Teuhema, the brother of sophomore offensive lineman Maea Teuhema, was also suspended during last football season, and Miles said he isn’t sure if he’ll return to the team.
“He’s currently under suspension,” Miles said. “We don’t know if that suspension will conclude ever. [We’ll] go from there.”
Senior linebacker Kendell Beckwith returned back to practice this week after nursing a knee injury the past few weeks. Miles said Beckwith was fine and expects him to play in the spring game.
The Tigers were also down a few players today. Senior cornerback Tre’davious White sat out the scrimmage, as Miles said he was “nicked.” However, Miles believes White could be back for the spring game.
Sophomore offensive lineman Will Clapp sat out the scrimmage also. Miles said Clapp, who has not practiced the past few days, he isn’t sure if he’ll be back for the spring game.
