LSU Student Government released its 2016 Louisiana Legislature Higher Education Report Card Wednesday. According to a press release, the Louisiana Senate earned a 2.81 grade point average, while the House finished with a 2.05 GPA.
GPA was calculated using LSU’s plus/minus grading scale.
Bills on fiscal notes, tuition autonomy and other policies were taken into account, according to the press release.
“For the first time, we are engaging legislators about student needs,” SG president Zack Faircloth said in the release. “Legislators’ ultimate decision to not fully fund TOPS is obvious in the HERC. We hope that the cuts to TOPS will only be temporary, because the promise of accessible education is the first step to long term societal investment in the people of Louisiana.”
The initiative began in 2015, and the SG executive branch calculated grades based on legislators’ votes on legislation SG supported, The Daily Reveille previously reported.
Several legislators expressed dissatisfaction with the last report card, arguing it did not provide a fair look at whether a legislator supported higher education.
