University students vied last night for the title of quiz bowl champion, testing their knowledge of black history.
The African American Culture Center hosted the W.E.B. DuaBois Quiz Bowl Tournament as part of Black History Month. Seven teams participated in the tournament.
After two rounds of elimination, the final two teams were the Association of Black Communicators and the executive board of the Black Student Union.
The Black Student Union team won the tournament. Team members were Shalonda Shillow, an education senior, Westley Bayas III, a political science senior, Kristy Davis, a mass communication junior, and Ralph Johnson, a political science junior.
Datrina Hinton, a mass communication sophomore, said she thought the night was important.
“We can all look back at the good things and people who did things to get us here today,” she said.
Terry Griffin, an electrical and computer engineering freshman, moderated the competition. He presented the teams, which competed two at time, with questions and determined who answered the questions correctly.
He said the competition was about more than just having fun.
“A lot of information will be passed through the night,” he said.
Johnson, who was on the winning team, said the night was about education.
“It educates not only African-Americans about African-American history, but it educates everyone,” he said.
The competition revealed that some competitors do not know all there is to know about black history.
“It proves we all need to touch up on our black history,” said Shillow, who was also on the winning team. “It’s important that we keep up this tradition.”
Jarel Francis, a business sophomore, said the night contributed to the goal of Black History Month — to educate.
“It gave people a chance to come together, hopefully learn something and have good, wholesome fun,” he said.
