The Barnes and Noble bookstore in the Union pledged to match the $2 made from every hurricane relief T-shirt sold through Student Government to raise money for the Hurricane Katrina Student Relief Fund.
SG announced Monday it will begin selling T-shirts in the bookstore and other licensed LSU stores to generate a $2 profit to benefit LSU students affected by the hurricane.
Because of Barnes and Noble’s pledge, $4 will be donated to the relief fund for each hurricane-relief T-shirt purchased in the LSU Union Bookstore.
Mark Kraner, director of Auxiliary Services, said he began discussing the possibility of a donation from Barnes and Noble after SG announced the T-shirt fund-raiser.
Kraner said Auxiliary Services and Barnes and Noble did not tell SG about their plans until after it was officially announced.
Kraner said the LSU Bookstore wanted to be a bigger part of the relief effort in addition to selling the shirts for SG.
Michelle Gieg, SG president, said the popularity of the T-shirt contributed to the decision to donate the additional $2.
Gieg said SG received orders from around the country, including a possible order of 100 T-shirts from the alumni association in New York.
“The shirt is a great way for people that are not here to help,” Gieg said. “Once the bookstore heard [about the popularity], they realized this is a positive effort that they want to contribute to.”
