Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority hoped to connect with the student body last week through a variety of open-campus events reaching out to students with differing interests.
“We try to put our name out by having activities every day,” said Melanie Auzenne, AKA vice president.
The week began with Gospel Explosion on Monday, in which students listened to various gospel singers and watched a step show, Auzenne said.
Alpha Kappa Alpha asked officials to present information on how to apply and survive graduate school for the program “School After Undergrad” last Tuesday.
Students in evening attire mingled to the sound of live jazz music during AKA’ffe Wednesday. Near the end of the night, students read and listened to poetry readings.
“It gave [Alpha Kappa Alpha] a chance to get our name out and other [students] a chance to get to know about us,” said Christian Dobbs, AKA member.
During Poise-N-Ivy Friday, members passed out candy to students in the Quad.
The University’s chapter hosts the week in conjunction with its national headquarters. Although the events are not required, most chapters across the nation enjoy hosting the events, Auzenne said.
“[The week] gives members an opportunity to have fun and put something on the campus would enjoy,” Dobbs said.
The women also hosted a male scholarship pageant similar to Miss America on Friday. Competition themes included business casual, formal and Egyptian attire, plus an onstage question.
