While many students spent Sunday afternoon catching up on homework or nursing wounds from Saturday night bar-hopping adventures, Greek community members danced, sang and jumped around on stage in crazy costumes at the Centroplex Theater.
Sorority and fraternity members participated in Songfest, the final Greek Week event, to a packed theater Sunday afternoon.
During the event, students performed group skits with themes like “Viva Las Vegas,” “Catch Me If You Can” and “Broadway.”
The event, in its 82nd year at the University, promotes positive Greek relations and works as a recruitment tool for potential Greek members, said Songfest Committee member Kate Darbonne.
Songfest Committee Chair Melanie Montgomery said Songfest is beneficial in bringing different campus chapters together.
“Songfest shows how the talent and cooperation of all the chapters helps bring the community together,” Montgomery said.
Ellen Burris, a psychology senior and Delta Gamma member participated in “The Heat is On” with fellow Delta Gamma members and members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.
“We practiced with the boys three times a week for an hour and a half to two hours,” Burris said.
Burris said practices are tough, but it helps participants become comfortable when they are performing on stage.
Delta Gamma and Pi Kappa Phi members walked on stage in fiery red costumes for their number.
“We wanted an original theme that no one else has done so it is not generic,” Burris said. “It takes a lot of work from everyone.”
Lizzie Schott, a psychology sophomore and Pi Beta Phi member, sang “How Do I Live” for a solo performance.
“This is the first time I’ve ever performed live in front of an audience, but it was so much fun,” Schott said. “Once I got up there it felt like I was meant to do this.”
Schott said she hopes to perform at Songfest in the future.
Assistant Dean of Greek Affairs Victor Felts said ticket sales from the event provide programming for the Greek community, like bringing in nationally known speakers and funding for retreats.
Felts said although this is only the second time he participated in Songfest, the performances have gotten better.
“There’s more emphasis this year on musical ability,” Felts said. “There’s a lot more singing than screaming.”
