Danny Hoch will be performing on Saturday, April 5, his one-man show, “Jail, Hospitals, and Hip-Hop.”
Danny, a native of Queens, New York, created a bevy of characters based on his experiences there. With the change of a shirt or hat, Hoch transforms from a Harlem DJ into a fast food worker into a wannabe rapper.
This show has been described as the bridge between hip-hop and theater. Hoch provides a look into the urban American experience and in doing so, connects with the next generation of theater patrons.
Hoch is an acclaimed actor, writer and solo performer. His accolades include two OBIES, a NEA Fellowship, a Sundance Writers Fellowship and the 1999 Tennessee Williams Fellowship. He has appeared on HBO, in Terrence Malick’s “Thin Red Line” and New Lines’ “Prison Song.” His writings have graced the pages of The Village Voice, The New York Times and The Nation.
Hoch is known for bringing art to disenfranchised children and jails. He works with The Creative Arts Team to bring conflict-resolution-through-drama to these people. Hoch is a founding member of the Active Element Foundation, which provides grants for grassroots performers and activists.
“Jail, Hospitals, and Hip-Hop” is set to be released on film soon.
Hoch will be conducting a master class in the Music and Dramatic Arts Building on Friday, April 4 in room 168 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. He will discuss the creation of “Jail, Hospitals, and Hip-Hop” as well as what it takes to make it in show business.
This show is brought to the student body by the performing arts series, which is a separate entity from the School of Music or Music and Dramatic Arts. It’s a kind of amalgamation of those sectors, which desire to expose students to more diverse performance experiences.
Tickets are $9 for students, $16 for faculty and staff and $21 for the general public. The show is Saturday, April 5 at the Union Theater and begins at 7:30 p.m.
For ticket information, contact the Union Theater’s box office at 578-5128 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or you can contact the Reilly Theatre’s box office at 578-3527, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
