The University issued probation terms to Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity in response to an April incident at the fraternity house.
According to Dean of Students Kevin Price, on or about April 4 and 5, 2003, four violations occurred at the house.
Price said people under age 21 consumed alcohol, Sig Ep did not ensure that members and guests displayed responsible behavior, people other than those served by the licensed bartender consumed alcohol and the event lasted past 2 a.m.
Because of the incident, Sig Ep was placed on University probation from May 6, 2003, to May 5, 2006.
Under the conditions of the probation, no alcohol is allowed in the Sig Ep house or on any property controlled by Sig Ep, including private rooms.
Chris Hudson, Sig Ep president at the time of the incident, said he thought it would be “a big change” without alcohol in the house.
In addition, Sig Ep has agreed to a membership review “in which members are retained who sincerely commit to and embrace the terms and spirit of this sanction,” Price said.
The alumni board president will head the membership review, Hudson said. The review will consist of an interview process. Hudson said he did not know any other details about the review.
Price said all members will be required to sign a pledge indicating they understand and agree to be subject to the terms of the sanction.
Sig Ep also must contact the Wellness Education Department and schedule an alcohol education program no later than Sept. 15, 2003. Ninety percent of chapter members must attend this program.
Hudson said he anticipates the program to consist of discussions about alcohol education, risks, statistics and consequences about the misuse of alcohol.
Greek Affairs director Victor Felts said Sig Ep would be automatically reinstated at the end of the probation period.
