It was a chilly Friday afternoon in Tiger Park. The kind of weather that a state like Pennsylvania is more familiar with than Louisiana. The colder temperatures did not stop the No. 6 ranked Tigers from defending their territory and defeating the Nittany Lions.
LSU fans managed to stay warm by bundling up in their winter coats and blankets as they watched the Tigers score four runs in the first inning to set the tone for the rest of the game.
“We’re the fighting Tigers and we’re here to compete,” Senior Outfielder McKenzie Redoutey said. “It’s very important to score first because that’s how you win a game.”
The team’s most promising inning came in the bottom of the third when they scored five runs. While, Penn State made four costly errors throughout the matchup to help the Tigers run away with the 10-1 win.
“I think my confidence is definitely coming from my teammates,” Redoutey said. “I feel like the whole lineup, we’re putting on a show.”
On the defensive side, Veteran Pitcher Sydney Berzon struck out five batters in five innings giving up one walk. As a result, Berzon improves to 5-0 on the season.
“Nobody even bats an eye when she is out there, it’s come to be expected for her to go out there and have a performance like that which is just not normal,” Head Coach Beth Torina said. “She’s so special.”
With the dominating performance, Beth Torina and the team improve to 11-0 as the Nittany Lions fall to 6-8 on the season.
“For the rest of the weekend, I feel like we’re just going to keep doing us and keep coming out there, showing up with the same energy and just keep playing LSU softball,” Freshman Pitcher Jayden Heavener said.
LSU defeated Penn State in five innings Friday afternoon. Despite that, the LSU Invitational is just getting started. The Tigers will play Southern Miss twice and Nichols State twice over the course of the weekend.
