LSU Baseball Head Coach Jay Johnson spoke to the media after sweeping West Virginia, 12-5, in Game Two of the Baton Rouge Super Regionals and punching a ticket to Omaha.
LSU’s electric at bats in Game One bled into Game Two. Jay Johnson touched on the influence Shortstop Steven Milam had on this.
“He is the best shortstop in America and took another step. It wasn’t just a great college player this weekend that’s what a major league player looks like in the box,” Johnson said.
Veteran players like Steven Milam and Jared Jones set the mindset of this successful 2025 LSU Baseball team, but there is only one player who has been with the team for four years, Josh Pearson. Pearson may not be a starter, but Johnson emphasized how reliable he is when he does get a moment to shine.
“One of my favorite players of all time,” Johnson said, “You know what you’re going to get.”
On the other hand Johnson pointed out how many freshmen have stepped up for the challenge throughout the season, and how this is something that is unique to LSU.
“It is a special group, and nobody in our league plays freshman,” Johnson said, “They are the foundation of this thing moving forward.”
Johnson also shared how he encourages all his players to enjoy the moment, and he leads by example. He was a few minutes late to the press conference because he was soaking up his team’s big win.
“I just really wanted these guys to achieve this…and I can’t wait to go chase a National Championship with them,” Johnson said.
Even though LSU has secured a chance to win the College World Series, the battle is far from over. The Tigers are set to play the Arkansas Razorbacks for their first game in Omaha.
