LSU Baseball secured their eighth National Championship in program history with a 5-3 winner takes all match up in Game Two against Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina came into the game vengeful and perhaps too fiery.
In the first inning, not one but two of the Chants Coaches were ejected. Head Coach Kevin Schnall and First Base Coach Matt Schilling were ejected for arguing the ball and strike count. Due to the prolonged arguing, Coach Schnall will be suspended for the first two Coastal Carolina games, and Coach Schilling will be suspended for the first three games next season.
It was a situation that should have never become so heated, but for a brief moment it looked like the Chanticleers were able to flush the situation. Designated Hitter Dean Mihos hit a home run to left field, giving Coastal Carolina a brief 1-0 lead.
But things just continued to slowly unravel for the teal and black. In the top of the fourth, LSU started to get rolling at the plate, and Jacob Morrison struggled to shut them down.
Morrison walked Jake Brown, Jared Jones singled and he hit Luis Hernandez, loading the bases for the Tigers. Chris Stanfield did his part and hit a 2-RBI single (3-1, LSU). Two outs later, the freshman phenom Derek Curiel hit a 2-RBI single, allowing Stanfield and Hernandez to score (5-1, LSU).
After allowing five runs, Morrison was relieved by Hayden Johnson. Not only did LSU end the Chanticleer’s 27 winning streak, but they also torched Morrison’s 12-0 pitching record.
Anthony Eyanson and Chase Shores threw a combined 13 strike outs in the game. Shores relieved Eyanson after he allowed three runs for the Chants.
Center fielder Wells Sykes hit a two run home run late in the game, closing the gap down to two runs (5-3, LSU). These were the last runs scored by Coastal Carolina.
LSU will head back to Baton Rouge, Louisiana with some new hardware.
