LSU women’s basketball keeps on rolling after a late offensive push in the second half to help get an 87-61 win against Louisiana Tech at the Smoothie King Center in the Compete 4 Cause Classic.
Going into Saturday’s matchup, LSU and in-state rival Louisiana Tech last played each other in the 2016-2017 season opener, but for LSU head coach Kim Mulkey, she knows this program all too well.
Mulkey, who played her college career and started her coaching career at Louisiana Tech, knew that the Lady Tech Techsters were highly efficient on offense and that the Tigers had to get to a great start defensively.
However, that didn’t happen. Nearly halfway through the first quarter, the Lady Techsters made three shots in a row from the three-point line, giving Louisiana Tech the lead. This led to a full timeout by the Tigers, giving them a chance to adjust.
Not only was it a rough start on defense for the Tigers, but also for them offensively. LSU would end the first quarter shooting 0-3 from the three-point line and having a 38.9 field goal percentage. With this in mind, sophomore guard Mikaylah Williams would take charge for LSU.
After a 10-0 run to start the second quarter, LSU would take the lead 27-19 against Louisiana Tech, allowing them to get momentum from an in-state crowd at the Smoothie King Center.
Williams would end the night with 19 points and 5 rebounds and give the Tigers what they needed to continue their offensive performance for the rest of the game.
With the third quarter underway, the Lady Techsters didn’t have any answers defensively against LSU players like Williams, leading them into giving up easy fouls in the paint.
The Lady Techsters would allow LSU to get to the free throw line, creating even more opportunities for the Tigers to increase their lead. LSU attempted 16 free-throw shots in the second half, finishing the night going 14-21 from the line.
By the end of the game, LSU would outscore Louisiana Tech three out of the fourth quarters, allowing them to add another win to its win column.
The Tigers are now 18-12 all time against the Lady Techsters and continue to be undefeated to start the 2025 season.
No.5 LSU (11-0) will face Morgan State for its next matchup in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Tuesday December 16 at 11 a.m. CT.
