LSU Women’s Basketball defeated Texas Tech 101-47, breaking an NCAA record with their 16th 100-point game of the season.
LSU set the pace of the game with 24 fast-breaks, 56% from the field, and out rebounding 44-27. The Tigers man-to-man defense stopped Texas Tech’s fast offensive movement, and even though Bailey Maupin led the Lady Raiders with 19 points, they never found rhythm.
Offensively, Mikaylah Williams and Flau’jae Johnson each finished with 24 points combining for steals, open threes, and points from the fast-break.
Amiya Joyner added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. LSU’s bench contributed 28 points, showcasing that tonight’s game was pure and connected basketball.
“I think that’s just my teammates finding me and me being ready to knock down shots”, Williams said. “That’s just them getting me open and me executing and knocking down the shot”.
This was the last game of her college career that Johnson would play in the PMAC since joining in her freshman year of 2022. The biggest takeaway for her was being a part of a team so beautiful, a staff that supports her, and a coach that has molded her into the player that she is today.
Looking towards the tournament, Johnson has confidence that her teammates will play their hardest.
“You want to start playing your best basketball at this time,” Johnson said. “You want to start clicking. You want everything to look seamless and I feel like everybody is locked in so this is the best time”.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey reflected on her time with Johnson and how LSU Women’s Basketball has grown since she started coaching there five years ago.
In Johnson’s words, “she’s been coaching like a hundred years”, but that level of experience is the reason why the Tigers win like they do.
“It’s a reward for a job well done through the course of the season,” Mulkey said. “I don’t take them for granted. I don’t take Sweet 16s, Elite Eights, I don’t take any of that for granted. Playing Duke, if that’s who we end up playing, it’s hard to beat people twice. They’re better, I’m sure, and I think we’re better. But the deeper you go in the tournament, the tougher it gets.”
The Tigers will be moving on to the third round of the NCAA March Madness Tournament where they will face off Duke in Sacramento, California.
