LSU hires former Tennessee assistant coach Gabe Lazo as a member of Coach Kim Mulkey’s staff.
Lazo strengthens what is already a top notch staff for the Tigers as he is an elite recruiter and has a significant amount of experience under his belt.
As a recruiter, Lazo helped the Lady Vols land the top portal class in 2025 according to ESPN along with adding a potent incoming freshman class. With this, Coach Mulkey thinks very highly of the incoming assistant.
“He has been an invaluable member of two SEC staffs with an unbelievable ability to teach the game and recruit the best players in the country,” Mulkey said during a press release.
In his two seasons in Knoxville, Lazo guided the Lady Volunteers to back to back NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the sweet sixteen in his first year. As a result, Lazo was chosen as the 2025 World Exposure Report Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to his time in Tennessee, Lazo spent time coaching at many different levels of basketball. He coached varsity high school basketball, mid-major division 1 basketball, and then worked his way up to the SEC where he served as an associate head coach at Mississippi State where he also helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament.
For Lazo, this role in Baton Rouge became available due to the departure of Gary Redus II who will serve as the next Head Coach for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
