Day two was a massive day for New Orleans Comic Con. The difference in the sheer amount of people at the convention center this day was utterly stark. At times the hall seemed close to capacity.
It was interesting to see the growth the con saw not only since the previous year but also from the previous day. Saturday was clearly meant to be the most substantial day of the convention, and this was reflected in the show’s programming.
Some of the day’s panels included spotlights on comic creators like Mike Mignola (creator of “Hellboy”), Chris Claremont (writer of numerous “X-Men” series), and the legendary Stan Lee.
The highlight of the day, and possibly the entire weekend, was the Matt Smith Q and A panel. The line to enter the panel was simply astounding, with thousands of people lining a good portion of the convention center’s considerable length and then wrapping around itself. The massive theatre where the panel was held was filled almost completely by the Eleventh Doctor’s passionate fans some of who waited hours for the chance to ask the actor a question.
“Basically, in Doctor Who always blame the Daleks,” said Smith in response to a young fan’s question about the show’s main antagonists. Every line Smith uttered was met with thunderous applause from the audience. Smith’s charm and wit were clearly incredibly appreciated by the fans who had waited for so long to see him.
The day wrapped up with a costume contest where many of the convention’s cosplayers competed for prizes. Some of my favorites included a full metal Iron Man suit, female versions of Thor and Loki and fully-functioning Dalek.
What impressed me most about this day at the con was how much more it had to offer. I was worried that this day would be less exciting as I had already seen many of the booths, but the sheer number of events planned throughout the day kept the con exciting.
Day three looks to be a slightly more low key experience, where hopefully the remaining jewels of the show wait to be experienced.
