The LSU swimming and diving squads put out strong performances Saturday against Southeastern Conference opponent Texas A&M on what was the Tigers’ senior day.
The LSU men’s squad was able to capture a victory against Texas A&M by a score of 157.5-142.5, while the women’s squad fell by a score of 168-127.
The LSU men were able to pull out a victory in a closely contended battle behind another strong performance on the diving board by Sean McKinney.
McKinney was able to go out with a splash on senior day with another great performance on the diving board finishing first on the 3-meter with a score of 417.23.
LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said he was glad to see McKinney put up another 400 point performance on a memorable day like senior day.
On the swim side for the men, the hunger to go out on top is what pushed them through to victory.
“They wanted this,” LSU swim coach Dave Geyer said. “Especially those seniors they’ve been burned by [Texas] A&M the last three years and they knew they wanted to come in and get this meet won.”
No one expressed the hunger to best Texas A&M more than junior captain Frank Greeff who made it clear from the beginning that he wanted the senior’s to end their home careers on top.
Geyer said that Greeff was a huge spark for the team doing a good job getting the team fired up.
“We’ve never seen that before,” Geyer said. “I’ve known that has been in him and I’ve encouraged it to come out a lot… it was good to see that fire come out of him and how the team responded to it. I’ve known since he’s been here the past three years that he’s a leader and a team is going to follow someone like that.”
On the women’s side, LSU fought hard but ended up coming up short. Geyer said that he told the women he was very proud of the way they stepped up and battled against a top 5 team in the country and that it’s very promising for the road ahead.
Although it was senior day it was freshman swimmer Kara Kopsco who put together a record breaking day for the women. Kopsco broke the school record for the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.12 breaking the previous record time of 1:56.67.
“That’s what she’s here for,” Geyer said. “Hats off to my staff for talking through a scenario this week to put her in a suit… it paid off huge dividends.”
With the meet being the squads’ senior day both coaches were very thankful for the seniors contributions to the team and what they have meant to the program over the years.
Although the seniors took one last dive off the high dive to celebrate successful careers at LSU their careers aren’t over yet. The squads begin to look forward to their meet in Houston on Jan. 31 where they take on both Rice and Tulane.
