A month ago, LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette appeared to be a lock to take home the school’s second Heisman trophy. Instead, he watched from home as Derrick Henry won Alabama’s second Heisman.
Fournette finished sixth in the final voting.
Finalists Henry, Christian McCaffrey and Deshaun Watson finished first through third respectively. Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Navy’s Keenan Reynolds finished fourth and fifth.
Fournette received only 10 first-place votes despite his nation-leading 158 rushing yards per game. Henry and McCaffrey led the Tigers’ star rusher in total yards with two more games played thanks to conference championship appearances and the cancellation of LSU’s season opener.
Despite the disappointing Heisman result, Fournette has been named an All-American by multiple outlets and broke the school’s single-season rushing record.
He’ll have a chance to improve on that record against Texas Tech in the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl on December 29th.
