Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Supporters United (GBLSU) spread Valentine’s spirit Thursday by handing out free hugs, of both the real and chocolate variations. The Hershey’s hugs were accompanied by cards that said “You’ve been embraced” and challenged recipients to hug 10 people. It said chances are at least one of them is a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans community. “I like talking to people and making them smile, so this is a good thing to do,” said Sally Adrina Taylor, GBLSU president. She said they are just trying to show affection and get love out there. This is the second year the group has given out Hershey’s Hugs on Valentine’s Day. Taylor said she gave out a lot of real hugs, too. Isaac Clark, a library employee, was a recipient of one. He said the hug improved his day. “It’s very cool for people who would usually feel left out to feel included,” Clark said of GBLSU’s mission. The organization was also advertising its upcoming event called Alternative Heartz. Taylor said the event is for singles, people who can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day with their loved one or people who are uncomfortable going out with their partner in public. “Two guys can look a little awkward,” she said. The event will be held Saturday at the Women’s Center. She said they will be watching “But I’m a Cheerleader” and eating Valentine’s candy.
