BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers signed off on a plan to spend $300 million in state surplus cash on hurricane protection and coastal restoration projects.
The plans drawn up by the Jindal administration will pump $155 million of the money into constructing and improving levees in southeast Louisiana. Another $5.5 million will be spent on levee projects in southwest Louisiana.
The spending plans also send $110 million to projects that will restore the coastline from erosion that was aggravated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
The Legislature’s joint budget committee approved the plans Friday.
Almost all the money will advance projects already approved by the federal government.
