The University has hired permanent replacements to teach Kevin Mulcahy’s political science classes for the remainder of the semester, according to an e-mail from James Stoner, Department of Political Science chair.Mulcahy, who has been at the University for 28 years, was arrested Sept. 4 for unauthorized entering of an inhabited dwelling. He was put on paid administrative leave, pending University review, effective the day of his arrest.John Harper has been hired as the new instructor for POLI 4036, the American Presidency. He took the class as an undergraduate and has since earned an advanced degree, Stoner said. Harper helped Mulcahy write the class syllabus and other class materials.Stoner said he substituted for POLI 2052, the Honors Intro American Government class, himself for the past three weeks. Stoner said a professor who has taught at the University before will take over the class next week. ”Exam dates will be adjusted so that students will know the person who is administering the test,” Stoner said. “I’m committed to see that, despite the disruption, the syllabus is completed.” Stoner said the course schedules are on track except for the Gustav-induced postponement.Mulcahy’s arrest is currently under an investigative probe by the University. Mulcahy and English professor Eldon Birthwright were drinking outside Birthwright’s apartment Sept. 4 when Mulcahy abruptly walked inside the apartment without Birthwright’s permission, according to a police affidavit.Mulcahy “suddenly became ill with diarrhea, experiencing an uncontrollable need to use the bathroom” and rushed through the unlocked door into Birthwright’s apartment to find the bathroom,” Mulcahy’s lawyer, Drew Louviere said in an e-mail to The Daily Reveille.Mulcahy entered into the apartment and “began taking off his clothes while grabbing onto [Birthwright’s] housemate,” Birthwright said in an e-mail obtained by The Daily Reveille. He said he was able to “force him out with the assistance of a neighbor.”Birthwright held a butcher knife against Mulcahy’s throat and forced him out of the apartment, Louviere said.Birthwright contacted the Baton Rouge Police Department that night, and Mulcahy was arrested and booked into parish prison.
