LSU students have high expectations for the Tigers’ starting quarterback — whoever they may be.Neither of the Tigers’ top two quarterbacks from 2007 will return to the team this season. Matt Flynn, who led the Tigers to a national championship, graduated and is now fighting for a spot in the NFL. Ryan Perrilloux, the 2007 Southeastern Conference Championship Game MVP, was dismissed from the team in May.Sophomore quarterback Andrew Hatch and redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Lee are competing for the starting quarterback position.Jarod Leleux, political science junior, said the quarterback along with the entire team will have pressure this season.”LSU is the defending national champions, so you are going to get everyone’s best shot,” Leleux said.Chad Caletka, undeclared sophomore, said he does not think an inexperienced quarterback will hinder LSU.”We will definitely get a bowl game,” Caletka said. The versatile LSU offense should help ease the transition for the quarterback and allow more carries for the running backs.”Having a new quarterback will allow our running backs a fair share of carries, but we are still going to throw the ball,” Johnson said.LSU coach Les Miles has not officially announced the starting quarterback, but many students think Hatch is better qualified for the job.Steven Johnson, business management junior, said Hatch is ready to start because he is older and has more experience than Lee.Johnson said Hatch will be the starting quarterback, and LSU has a team full of leaders either quarterback can count on to set an example and not make many mistakes.Leleux said Hatch would be a good choice to start, because he knows what it is going take to win.”He seems like an articulate guy and appears to have his head on his shoulders,” Leleux said. While Hatch was not the most highly recognized and recruited quarterback, his intelluctual background should help lead the Tigers offense on the field.Hatch transferred from Harvard and has a reputation of being a smart player.”Quarterback is a tough position, and Hatch can be a good game manager,” Johnson said. While students have faith in Hatch, they admit experience is a key attribute in a quarterback that would have helped going into this season, Johnson said.Leleux said anytime a school has a new quarterback it is obviously going to be a new start, so the season will be “whatever you make out of it.””He has a lot to learn, but he’s been learning since last season,” Leleux said.Quarterbacks are always going to have pressure, but Johnson said he does not think there is any more for Hatch or Lee than for any other college quarterback.Johnson said the SEC is tough and he thinks Florida junior quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is going to have more pressure than Hatch.Leleux said he does not think having a new quarterback will help or harm the upcoming football season.Caletka said students are more concerned about getting tickets to the football games.”Everybody wants tickets this year, because we are defending national champions,” Caletka said.—-Contact Tiffany Tucker at [email protected]
