The Student Senate voted Wednesday to request the addition of a student representative as the member-at-large to the LSU System Board of Supervisors.
Student Government President Michelle Gieg said an LSU System student or recent graduate would add “fresh input” and allow a young leader to provide new ideas. Gieg said “current state affairs” make this addition important for Louisiana’s future.
Although there is already a Board of Supervisors student representative with a one-year term, Gieg said the new representative would have a six-year term.
College of Agriculture Sen. Colorado Robertson authored the resolution, which passed with a 34-5 vote.
Robertson said the resolution, which he hand-delivered to Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s office Thursday morning, would ensure student input on all levels of state government.
Robertson said the potential member’s six-year term would allow much more input than the current one-year term.
“It takes time to develop relationships,” Robertson said.
If Blanco decides to accept the resolution, she would appoint the student representative who would then go before the state Senate for approval, Robertson said.
Roderick Hawkins, deputy press secretary for Blanco’s office, said the governor will take all recommendations and suggestions under consideration.
