SPEEDY FRESHMAN
After a 30-yard gain on the ground against Kentucky two weeks ago, true freshman wide receiver Trindon Holliday followed up with another big gain Saturday against the Bulldogs.
Holliday scored the Tigers first touchdown of the game on a 38 yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
“We have been running that play right along, not with Trindon obviously,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “He’s had that play in his daily work for quite some time. We’re just calling his number a little bit more.”
HIGH PRAISE FOR THE ‘D’
Miles said he can make one promise to the remaining opponents left on LSU’s schedule.
“One thing that seems to be a qualifying characteristic of playing LSU is that you will sustain contact,” Miles said. “I think four of the best hits I’ve ever seen by safeties were put on by [junior safety Craig] Steltz and [senior safety] LaRon Landry.”
The Tigers held the Bulldogs to 211 yards of total offense. LSU has allowed only two touchdowns in 24 quarters in home games this season.KEEP RUNNING
LSU amassed 184 yards rushing Saturday against Fresno State using its running back by committee system.
Eight players recorded at least one rushing attempt against the Bulldogs, and junior Alley Broussard led all players with 67 yards on five carries and one touchdown.
“It’s nice to see a little bit more running attack,” Miles said. “What you saw is kind of what I hope we get from this point forward.”
GOOD FIND
Senior wide reciever Craig “Buster” Davis is filling in nicely for the Tigers as a punt returner.
Davis scored on a 77-yard punt return against Fresno State, which was his first score as a punt returner ever.
In two games as the team’s primary punt returner, Davis is averaging 18 yards per return on six attempts.
“Having Buster Davis back there…is a real addition to us,” Miles said. “I felt like it was really nice to have a big play in the punting game.”
BYE WEEK ROUTINE
Miles said his players will not practice Monday or Saturday during the team’s off week.
One factor Miles said he wants his team to focus on is each player’s academic progress this week.
“You tell your kids, like you did today, get your butt to class,” Miles said. “You take a small number of guys and tell them there is no other priority this week for you but academics.”
POLLS
LSU’s 38-6 defeat Saturday of Fresno State did not do much to change its positions in the major polls.
The Tigers remained No. 14 in the Associated Press Poll, jumped up two places to No.12 in the USA Today/Coaches’ Poll and moved up one notch to No. 13 in the Harris Interactive Poll.
In the Bowl Championship Series standings, the Tigers moved up two slots to No. 16.
INJURIES
Miles said no players sustained any significant injuries against Fresno State.
Senior defensive back Daniel Francis, sophomore center Brett Helms and senior safety Jessie Daniels are all expected to play in two weeks versus the University of Tennessee.
Junior offensive lineman Will Arnold and senior tight end Keith Zinger are questionable for the Tennessee game, Miles said.
Arnold is overcoming a sprained ankle and minor arthroscopic knee surgery. Zinger is recovering from a lengthy stomach ailment.
