LSU men’s basketball junior forward Glen Davis was named as a candidate on the final voting ballot for the 2006-2007 Wooden Award All-American Team and Wooden Award Player of the Year.
Davis was named to the 10-member Wooden All-American team for the 2005-2006 season.
The 2006-2007 ballot features five Southeastern Conference players, including the University of Tennessee’s Chris Lofton and the University of Florida’s Corey Brewer, Taurean Green and Joakim Noah.
Other notable players on the ballot are Ohio State’s Greg Oden, UCLA’s Arron Afflalo, the University of Texas’ Kevin Durant and University of Nevada’s Nick Fazekas.
Davis first heard the news after Monday’s practice and expressed slight disbelief at his nomination.
“That’s good,” Davis said. “Top 22? I’m shocked.”
Davis said he did not expect to be nominated after missing three games from a quadriceps muscle injury. He also said he did not think his chances would be high because of LSU’s 16-14 record.
“I did about the same thing last year as far as individually, but we haven’t been winning,” Davis said. “I’m really shocked, and you know, thanks. Hopefully we can win the SEC tournament.”
Davis averages 17.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He averaged 18.6 points and 9.7 rebounds during the 2005-2006 season.
“I just wasn’t expecting it,” he said. “When you win, you get more accolades. We haven’t had a lot of attention like last year.”
Fans can cast their votes on woodenaward.com – for the first time in the award’s history – for the Wooden Award Player of the Year. The winner will be announced April 7 on CBS.
Davis said the award would not affect whether he will enter the NBA draft after this season’s conclusion.
“There’s a lot of options,” he said. “We’ve got to see what’s the right path. to take.”
