A group of scholars at the University are studying issues related to sustainability along the Gulf Coast in an effort called the Coastal Sustainability Studio, according to a University news release.
Funded by a $350,000 grant from America’s Wetland Foundation, the Studio team is comprised of architects, engineers and coastal scientists.
The Studio will bring together experts and disciplines from across campus, the release states. The College of Art and Design, College of Engineering and School of the Coast and the Environment are among the participators.
“We really want this to be University-wide,” said Lynne Carter, associate director of the Coastal Sustainability Studio, in the release. “We’re trying to take a comprehensive look at how to build a more sustainable coast.”
For its first project, the Coastal Sustainability Studio will focus on Bayou Bienvenue, a wetlands area near New Orleans Lower Ninth Ward.
As its name implies, the study will be conducted in a studio setting.
“That means those involved will be rolling up their sleeves and working side-by-side in creative problem-solving to produce real, workable solutions,” the release states.
