Coming off a third place finish in the Women’s College World Series for a second straight year and an appearance in the SEC tournament final, the LSU softball team has high expectations going into the 2017 season.
Head coach Beth Torina spoke about the upcoming season at softball media day Monday afternoon.
The Tigers have five returning starters to this year’s team along with a recruiting class that includes seven freshman.
“I think this is one of the fastest teams we’ve had here in my time here,” Torina said. “Our freshman are really talented. I expect to see them early on.”
Torina said having a strong group of upperclassman is critical to helping guide the younger players to get to the College World Series — something the juniors on the team have experienced their entire careers.
“I think these guys understand what it takes to get there. They know it’s a lot of work,” Torina said.
The Tigers open the season Friday, Feb. 10, against Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
