Mission accomplished.LSU’s gymnastics team headed into Friday’s meet against Centenary looking to boost its shaky road Regional Qualifying Score, and it did just that. The Tigers defeated Centenary, 196.425–187.770, to scratch a 195.350 off their previous RQS score and post their best road score of the season. The victory improved the No. 11 Tigers (8-4-1, 2-3-1 Southeastern Conference) to 28-1 all-time against Centenary (0-7), with their only loss coming on Feb. 1, 1984.But the Tigers scored lower than 196.525 at Centenary for the first time since 2001.LSU coach D-D Breaux was quick to point out the meet’s tempo was slow, as judges had to confer numerous times throughout the night. But she noted the tempo wasn’t the only problem for her team.”We didn’t stick our landings,” Breaux said. “But from the mount to where we should have stuck our landings, we did some really good gymnastics.”LSU senior Susan Jackson once again headlined the Tigers’ lineup, posting a meet-best all-around score of 39.500 en route to two event titles and the all-around title. Her 39.500 was slightly below her 39.525 from last week, as she once again struggled on numerous events.Jackson now has captured 10 all-around titles this season, tying her with former Tiger standout Sandra Smith for most in a single season in LSU history.”I felt good about every event except for vault,” Jackson said. “The judging was a little bit harsh, but I was happy with my performance, given the environment.”The Tigers opened the evening by struggling with dismounts on the bars, scoring a 49.075.The first three gymnasts in the lineup all scored 9.750 before the final three were all able to go 9.800 or above, capped by Jackson’s 9.900 for her first event title on the evening.LSU turned around on the vault with a solid start from the first three gymnasts, including a pair of 9.850 scores, before the following three gymnasts all faltered, posting well below their season averages. That faltering included a season-worst 9.825 vault from Jackson, leaving the Tigers with a team score of 49.125.Sophomore Ashley Lee tied with senior Kayla Rogers for the vault title, each scoring a 9.850. It was the second-straight vault title for both Lee and Rogers.LSU junior Sam Engle said she was happy with the way the team handled the early adversity.”We got rid of a 195 away score, which we needed to do,” Engle said. “Centenary is such a different environment, and that showed us we can adjust to anything.”The floor was a source of controversy, as multiple Tigers initially had their starting values lowered below their normal 10.0, which in turned lowered individual scores. After all was said and done, two Tigers had their scores adjusted, but Engle ended with a 9.650 because her starting value was lowered to 9.80.The Tigers ended with a 49.050 on the floor. That score came on the heels of a season-high 49.425 on the floor last weekend, as Jackson ended with a 9.900 after posting a 9.95 last week to win the event title.”There were a couple of judging problems throughout the night,” Engle said. “We do need to work on hitting our landings, but all in all, we did well tonight.”The Tigers finished the evening with a 49.175 on the beam.Engle continued her recent streak of stellar beam performances, scoring a season-best 9.925, to win her second straight beam title.”I’ve been feeling really confident on the beam,” Engle said. “This year has been a lot better for me. I’ve been a lot calmer on the beam.”—-Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
