LSU field athlete Walter Henning was named the Southeastern Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week after his performance in the New Mexico Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Henning set a new personal record in the 35-pound weight throw by nearly 15 inches after he launched the weight 75 feet, 8 inches on his fifth throw of the competition.
Henning’s throw is the NCAA leader by nearly a foot as Memphis’ Steffen Nerdal ranks No. 2 in the country with a throw of 74 feet 10 inches.
The junior thrower will lead the No. 4 ranked Tigers this weekend against their toughest competition of the young season when they take on No. 1 Texas A&M and SEC rival, No. 7 Arkansas.
