Everything’s bigger in Texas. As it turns out, tennis is no exception.No. 36 Texas A&M dismantled the No. 42 LSU women’s tennis team, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.Last season’s match took five hours before the Tigers (2-3) overcame the Aggies (1-2) to win, 4-3. The Aggies made amends Sunday by winning in only three and a half hours.Things started off choppy for the Lady Tigers, who surrendered the doubles point to the Aggies.LSU lost the first two doubles matches by the same score, 8-2. Sophomore Whitney Wolf and freshman Keri Frankenberger led for the majority of their match but couldn’t hold on in the tiebreaker, falling 8-7 (7-1).The Aggies made swift work of four Lady Tigers in singles. Texas A&M was already crowned the victor before LSU freshmen Ebie Wilson and Kaitlin Burns finished their singles matches.Burns won her match against Stephanie Davidson, 6-3, 3-6 (10-6), while Wilson dropped hers in the tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5 (10-7).”I wish we could have won, but I’m glad I got a win for the team,” Burns said. “[Davidson] made a few errors on her forehand, and I got a few lucky breaks on some shots.LSU coach Tony Minnis was proud of his freshmen but disappointed at the overall play.”The freshmen did great,” Minnis said. “They played with great effort, but we’ve got to play better than that.”In the first four singles matches, the Lady Tigers lost 48 of 57 games played. The No.120-ranked Wolf couldn’t handle the Aggies’ No. 88 Elze Potgieter, as Wolf fell 6-1, 6-0. Senior Hannah Robinson lost, 6-0, 6-2, senior Nicole Kantor fell to No. 117 Nazari Urbina, 6-1, 6-1, and Frankenberger dropped her match, 6-0, 6-3, in the first four singles matches.”There’s no excuse for how we played today,” Minnis said. “We just got beat very soundly, and we didn’t have the fire that we normally have.”Things were just as grim for the men’s tennis team. The No. 32 Rice Owls (4-1) thrashed the No. 33 LSU men’s tennis team (0-3), 6-1, at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston on Friday. Freshman James Turbervill recorded a singles win against Rice’s Jon Chang in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. But the remaining five Tigers were finished in straight sets in singles. Taking on No. 19 Bruno Rosa, the Owls’ only ranked player, proved too arduous a task for LSU sophomore Neal Skupski, who lost, 6-1, 6-3. The Owls took two of three matches in doubles. LSU freshman Roger Anderson and Skupski won their doubles match, 8-3. The tandem of LSU junior Sebastian Carlsson and freshman Stefan Szacinski lost, 8-5, while freshman Olivier Borsos and Turbervill fell in a tight match, 9-7. Junior Julien Gauthier, who won the tournament against Rice last season, sat out with an ankle injury. “We played better in spots, but we are still missing Julien Gauthier, especially in doubles,” LSU coach Jeff Brown said in a news release. It’s the third-straight loss for LSU since the ITA Kickoff Weekend where the Tigers fell to then-No. 13 Florida State and then-No. 19 Louisville.–Contact Rowan Kavner at [email protected]
