Five days after LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Dee Anderson had the best game of his career against Auburn, the junior wide receiver finished with a career-high five receptions and 80 yards with a long of 28 against Louisiana Tech in the Tigers 38-21 win.
“If there’s an MVP tonight, he was the MVP of the game,” Orgeron said in his post-game press conference. “I thank god that we had him.”
When junior quarterback Joe Burrow needed a big play he looked Anderson’s way. When Louisiana Tech had seized the moment and cut LSU’s lead to 24-21, it was Anderson who made the big play the Tigers needed.
The 6-foot-6, 229 pound Anderson adjusted to the ball, made the catch and was able to drag his feet in-bounds to complete the play for a 28-yard gain. Then a few plays later on third-and-8 from Tech’s 15, Burrow threw a jump ball to Anderson who drew a pass interference call in the end zone. The drive was later capped off with a touchdown run by senior running back Nick Brossette.
Burrow decided before the play that’s where he was going to go with the ball when he recognized it was one-on-one coverage.
“Dee was eating all night,” said Burrow, who credited Anderson for fighting back towards the ball on a bad throw to draw the pass interference.
“When he plays well, we play well.”
It’s a great revelation for LSU’s offense. The team has looked for a consistent second option on the other side of sophomore wide receiver Justin Jefferson in the first three games.
After a constant rotation between junior Stephen Sullivan, freshman Ja’Marr Chase, and Anderson, it appears he is one who has separated himself.
Anderson has always been one of the better talents at wide receiver on LSU’s roster, but he struggled with issues off the field during his first two years on the team and was one of 13 players suspended for the Tigers’ season opener against BYU last season.
“I think Dee’s come a long way,” Orgeron said. “I think he’s a fantastic athlete. I think he’s really worked hard on his maturity and I’m proud of him. He’s got a ways to go, but I think he’s doing all the things we ask of him or he wouldn’t be on this team.”
