LSU kicks off its season Sunday against Miami in AT&T Stadium, as coach Ed Orgeron hopes to start the season strong.
“We’re ready to play,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “It’s a very good Miami team.”
Position still up for grab
LSU coach Ed Orgeron has still not decided on two key positions ahead of the Miami game on Sunday. On the defensive side of the ball newly reinstated cornerback Kristian Fulton and freshman Kelvin Joseph are still fighting for the second cornerback position alongside sophomore Greedy Williams.
The offensive line is also undetermined with junior college transfer Badara Traore and junior Adrian Magee battling it out for the right tackle position.
Regardless of who starts the game at either position, Orgeron stated that both players will see time out on the field.
Orgeron emphasis execution
Orgeron’s message to the team revolved around the need to execute on both sides of the ball.
“We need to take care of the ball on offense and we need to protect against the deep ball on defense,” Orgeron said. “We need to be an explosive football team, tackle, line of scrimmage discipline, not commit a lot of foolish penalties and be very disciplined as a football team.”
Confidence in special teams
Kicker Cole Tracy comes to LSU as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. Tracy beat out last year’s starter Connor Culp and backup Jack Gonsoulin for the starting job.
Tracy won the 2017 Fred Mitchell Award awarded to the best placekicker in the FCS, Division II, Division III and NJCAA.
Orgeron said that his confidence in the field goal kicking may affect his decision making in the game.
“I think he will do well,” Orgeron said. “He kicked today very well, he kicked well in scrimmages, I expect him to do well. It gives you more confidence.”
