Visitation and a funeral service will be held in memory of University student Kelli Williams tonight in Slidell.
Services for Williams, who died after collapsing on campus Monday afternoon, will be held at Honaker Funeral Home at 8 p.m. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the funeral begins.
LSUPD Maj. Ricky Adams said that Williams collapsed while walking to her car in the tennis parking lot near the Carl Maddox Field House. A bystander performed first aid, and Williams was rushed to Baton Rouge General Medical Center Mid-City where she was pronounced dead.
According to a New Orleans Times-Picayune obituary, Williams, who was a 22-year-old elementary education major, died of viral myocarditis — an inflammation of the heart muscle.
The U.S. National Library of Medicine defines myocarditis as an uncommon disorder caused by a viral infection. Myocraditis can often be preceded by viral, bacterial or parasitic infections.
The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Chief of Operations Don Moreau would not release Williams’ cause of death but said she died of natural causes that were not contagious.
The visitation and funeral service are open to the public, but the burial will be private.
