As the result of a clerical error by Student Government Commissioner of Elections Devin Reid, an election will be held for the College of Design Senate seat tomorrow.
Reid declared Colleen Landry, from the “Making It Happen” ticket, the winner because he thought Abby Cantrell, from the “In Focus” ticket, was ineligible for the race.
The race was not included on the March 30 ballot because Reid thought Cantrell did not attend a required Senate meeting for all Senate candidates.
Reid said that when he was creating the ballot, he did not see Cantrell’s name on the sign-in sheet from the Senate meeting and therefore assumed she was disqualified.
There are only two candidates running for the seat.
Reid said the College of Design had all races on the ballot, except for the Senate seat.
Reid said he realized his mistake when examining expenditure reports that were due March 31, the day after the race. Expenditure reports state how much money was spent by each candidate on a ticket for the overall campaign. He saw Cantrell’s name on an expenditure report and realized she had been left out of the election.
Landry said she thought her seat was unopposed, but that she does not mind having the election because it was not Cantrell’s mistake.
“I want it to be fair for her,” Landry said.
Cantrell could not be reached for comments before press time.
The election is not a run-off because run-offs are typically a second election needed when two candidates did not get enough of the votes.
Neither of these candidates appeared on the March 30 ballot.
Reid said an e-mail was sent to all students in the College of Design to inform them about the election. He said they can vote from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. from any computer through their PAWS desktop tomorrow.
