Chancellor Mark Emmert addressed concerns regarding his decision to leave LSU for the presidency at the University of Washington during the LSU Board of Supervisors meeting Thursday in New Orleans.
LSU System President William Jenkins said he has “very mixed emotions” about losing Emmert.
Emmert was praised for his accomplishments in furthering the University’s Flagship Agenda.
“On behalf of the LSU community, we are going to miss Chancellor Emmert,” Jenkins said.
Emmert’s acceptance of the new position did not come as a surprise to Jenkins.
“I was aware that the University of Washington sought him out,” Jenkins said. “I knew that when it came calling, it would be a real problem.”
Emmert said he always has had strong ties to UW.
“The University of Washington is my alma mater,” Emmert said. “I grew up 20 miles away from it. I have always wanted the chance to go back.”
The Chancellor said he still sees a bright future for LSU.
“This University is heading in a good direction,” Emmert said. “I have no doubt — no shred of doubt — that the momentum and progress will continue unabashed.”
No firm date has been set for Emmert’s departure.
“It will likely be some time over the course of the summer,” Emmert said. “Between now and then, I will not stop working for the University.”
The Board of Supervisors also addressed rumors that possible replacements for Emmert already have been considered.
“Not a name has been discussed,” said Roger Ogden, chairman of the Board of Supervisors.
Emmert wanted to reassure that he will not forget his days at LSU.
“Once you’re a Tiger, you are always a Tiger,” Emmert said.
