LSU swimming coach Jeff Cavana announced his resignation on Monday, citing his desire to pursue other professional opportunities as the primary reason.
Cavana, who graduated from Western Kentucky in 1980, completed his 15th season at LSU this past year.
After serving as an assistant coach since 1989, Cavana took over the head coaching position in August of 2000 following the retirement of former coach Rick Meador.
In his final season at LSU, Cavana led the men’s team to a seventh-place finish in the Southeastern Conference, finishing No. 21 in the nation.
The women’s team finished ninth in the SEC at No. 24 in the nation.
Athletic Director Skip Bertman said he was proud of what Cavana was able to accomplish at LSU.
“Jeff has been a valuable member of the LSU athletics program and we thank him for his service and his commitment to LSU swimming,” Bertman said.
Bertman added that a search for LSU’s new swimming coach will begin immediately.
