LSU takes pride in supporting freedom of speech. However, after a student organization made a post on the organization Instagram directed towards a decision LSU is debating on making.
In the post the organization put, “The Black Law Students Association at LSU is deeply disappointed and outraged by the university’s decision to prohibit affinity groups from wearing their organization’s memorabilia at graduation.”
BLSA then goes on to say, “by preventing members from proudly wearing symbols of heritage, resilience, and community. For Black law students in particular, this prohibition undermines the significance of the Kente Stole….”
Many attempts were made to receive a comment from the Black Law Association but they have yet to provide further information.
“It represents something bigger than myself. It represents all of the black students at LSU, all of the black people who couldn’t go to LSU because it was before desegregation,” Kayleigh Reaux, senior and President of Future Black Women in Law Association said.
Graduation is an important time for most seniors, and a lot of the time they look forward to being able to showcase all of their involvements.
The debate over cultural representation at LSU graduation continues, with students waiting for more answers.
