LSU’s Student Government elections are making headlines again after one campaign got disqualified for the second time.
The Foret-Tatman: Forward campaign has been disqualified from the LSU Student Government elections for not reporting their spending correctly.
The campaign listed things like jambalaya, gas for generators, and buttons as free. However, the Election Court said they should’ve listed the actual prices. That pushed them over the spending limit.
“By overspending, they are violating one of the most central principles to our code,” John Michael Sweat said, who brought the case against them.
This isn’t the first time the campaign was disqualified. It happened before the election too, after bribery accusations. That decision was later reversed after some state lawmakers stepped in.
This time, Foret-Tatman: Forward argued they followed advice from the Election Commission, and said the rules weren’t very clear.
Another campaign, Henderson-Layrisson, also got in trouble. A student said the campaign’s presidential candidate helped him change his vote after he submitted it. The court said it wasn’t very ethical but didn’t disqualify them.
Although SG elections were held on March 20 and 21, the results are still pending due to these ongoing cases.
