The development group who was the sole finalist to build LSU’s new basketball arena is still “working closely” with the school after receiving a federal indictment last week for rigging a previous arena bid process, The Baton Rouge Advocate has reported.
A spokesperson with Oak View Group, which paid $15 million in penalties for conspiring with another bidder to ensure that it was awarded a contract to build University of Texas-Austin’s Moody Center in 2018, told The Advocate the company is still working with LSU, calling the university its “partner.”
Oak View Group also told The Advocate that it’s involved in the process for selecting a sponsor whom the arena will be named after. The leading candidate for that is Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
“As part of this process, we are seeking a naming rights partner who shares a strong commitment to the Baton Rouge community and is dedicated to supporting its long-term cultural and economic growth,” Oak View Group said. “We will share additional details at the appropriate time.”
LSU Athletics spokesperson Zach Greenwell said no deal has been finalized or approved with Oak View Group. The same is true for the naming rights agreement.
“All involved parties are evaluating the implications on the potential arena project in Baton Rouge considering this week’s news regarding Oak View Group,” Greenwell said in a statement to the Reveille after the indictment. “The future status of the project will be informed by a due diligence review.”
The new basketball arena will replace LSU’s PMAC as the home of the university’s men and women’s basketball teams, as well as the gymnastics team.
