With Hispanic heritage month starting this Wednesday the Latino American Student Organization, LASO, kicked it off with their first-ever bilingual story time.
The event took place at the South Baton Rouge Library and had bilingual LSU students read “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds in both English and Spanish. The two hosts, Margaret Piccoli and Isabel Matus, Professors in Education and Foreign Language, brought students together to help run the event.
“We’re collaborating where we can create an experience, an opportunity, where our students are able to work with children that are learning English as another language, or Spanish as another language,” said Piccoli
The reading was followed by arts and crafts with the kids and counted as service hours towards members of LASO, as well as hands-on learning experience for students in English second language education classes.
LASO will be hosting more readings across libraries in Baton Rouge every Tuesday until Nov. 4th. For more information visit their instagram @LASO.LSU
