After defeating Arkansas this past Saturday in the “Battle of the Boot”, LSU faces their next opponent in Death Valley again this weekend.
What was once penciled in as a routine non-conference matchup has quickly turned into an intriguing game, thanks to two injured starting quarterbacks, an interim head coach in Baton Rouge, and Western Kentucky’s long-awaited return to Tiger Stadium.
Garrett Nussmeier has been out with a recurring abdominal injury. This made Michael Van Buren rise to the challenge this past weekend.
“I think he is an ascending player, who continues to improve, and the more he plays, I think the more productive he will be,” Interim Head Coach Frank Wilson mentioned.
Western Kentucky, like LSU, has its starting quarterback, Maverick McIvor, sidelined with a left shoulder injury. This puts redshirt freshman Rodney Tisdale Jr. in the starting lineup.
For Western Kentucky, this isn’t just another game; it’s the biggest one on their schedule. The Hilltoppers haven’t played in Baton Rouge since 2015. Returning to Death Valley is both a measuring stick and a massive opportunity for a C-USA contender hungry for national attention.
“Excited to get the opportunity, let’s try to win that football game. I have tremendous respect for them, and it will be cool to go there and play them,” WKU Head Coach Tyson Helton stated.
With Western Kentucky, it’s about proving they can compete with a brand-name powerhouse, even in one of the toughest stadiums in football.
For LSU, this game is about building confidence under a new leadership/quarterback, winning back-to-back after losing the last few games, and proving that the team’s depth can carry the Tigers through all the adversity.
The stage is set for a showdown for backup quarterbacks, fresh leadership, and both teams coming off a win at home.
Make sure to watch the Tigers take on the Hilltoppers here in Tiger Stadium this Saturday, November 22, at 6:45 PM.
