A new program at Baton Rouge Community College is helping domestic violence survivors move forward.
The Safe Wheels Alliance program gives survivors the opportunity to have their cars repaired.
The best part – it’s completely free.
“It’s actually wonderful and we get a great opportunity to help these students and to help the community and make positive change in the community,” said BRCC student Demetri Harris.
The partnership allows students to work on the cars to get some hand-on experience, using the knowledge they learn in the classroom.
Reed Mundy, an advanced instructor and BRCC’s Transportation Department Chair, said that the partnership benefits everyone in many ways.
“You’re helping our college as well because students need real-life experiences working on real customers’ cars,” Mundy said. “So, you’re actually doing us as much of a service as we are for you”.
The program is part of BRCC’s mission to create meaningful connections between students and the community.
While the story may be about cars, it is also about second chances and proving that some lessons go beyond the classroom.
