The transfer portal has officially come to a close this season, and there was a lot of action.
With over 37 LSU football players deciding to enter their names in the portal, Lane Kiffin had a large load to handle.
After Garrett Nussmeier suffered his injury halfway through the last season, Michael Van Buren stepped up and started in four games. Although he may have had the opprotunity to continue playing quarterback for the Tigers, he decided to transfer to the University of South Florida. His backup, Colin Hurley, also decided to leave the program and transfer to Michigan, leaving no scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
Starting Wide Receivers Kyle Parker and Nic Anderson, among others, also decided to commit to other schools, leaving openings in the wide receiver room.
Last season, the team really struggled with its offensive line play, eight of which hit the transfer portal almost right when it opened.
To fill in the gaps Kiffin got to work and the Tigers have signed 35 new players as of Sunday night.
One being incoming quarterback Sam Leavitt from Arizona State University, who also ranked as the number 1 overall player in the transfer portal. The 6 ‘2 205 pound sophomore had the school record for total offense by a freshman with 3,328 yards and was second in program history in passing yards by a freshman at 2,885.
The last time LSU signed a quarterback from ASU was only a few years ago which produced Heisman award winner Jayden Daniels.
The Tigers also added former 5-star and USC transfer Husan Longstreet and Elon transfer Landen Clark.
With new quarterbacks, LSU had to also build up its wide receiver room, signing ten new receivers to the roster.
Eugene Wilson III was ranked as the 12th-best receiver in the portal. Coming from Florida last season, he had 27 receptions, with 239 yards, and 3 touchdowns. Another strong signee is Tre Brown from Old Dominion, who had 38 receptions for 762 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Let’s see how Lane Kiffin can pull everyone together in hopes of his first successful season with the Tigers this fall.
